“On March 4, the year 1386, Władysław Jagiełło is crowned king of Poland, thus beginning the long reign of the Jagiellonian dynasty on the Cracow throne. Shortly after the coronation, along with his wife Jadwiga, he is on his way to Vilnius to begin the process of christening Lithuania. Royal couple is accompanied by the Duke of Mazovia, Siemowit IV, who has just paid homage to the new king, which was the commitment included in the peace treaty concluded with Jadwiga on 12 December 1385.
Royal procession stops at the castle of Cracow bishops in Iłża, where a knight tournament is held in honour of the king and queen, attended by prominent knights from Poland and Mazovia, as well as distant ends of Europe. Convention of Arthurian legends, fashionable among Latin knights, is also familiar within the Polish lands - therefore, participants will play the roles of Lancelot, Gawain, Percival, Galahad or Tristan and will fight before the King Arthur himself.
Eight teams will take part in the tournament and they will compete in archery, hiking, fighting, horseback riding and in the kickback races.
Iłża attracts crowds of tourists - another opportunity to see the royal couple may not happen soon. Tournament is also an excellent opportunity to earn money - craftsmen or artists will sell their products and services and money poaches will change its owners - not always legally ...”.
We would like to invite you for the second time to the May weekend at the Iłża castle. Holy Grail Tournament is an international event and participants will be happy to tell you about the European 14th century life – about trade and craft, as well as knight tournaments.
Details are yet to be revealed, but we encourage you to save a date to move with us to the Middle Ages and see for yourself that it was not so dark!
